Smoking is 'me time'

Smoking is ‘me time'

You may feel like smoking is a reward and something you look forward to during your day, but this is just your body’s reaction to nicotine, the addictive drug which you get from tobacco. Even if you think you feel a bit better after smoking, this feeling wears off and will leave you craving another cigarette.

Smoking a cigarette may give you a few minutes break when you don’t need to think about anything else. However, it doesn’t change anything - it will all still be there a few minutes later when you’ve had your cigarette.

It may feel like smoking is something that you can rely on but smoking is not your friend, it is your worst enemy who is damaging your baby’s health.

Stopping smoking doesn’t mean that you have to give up the time you would normally take to smoke. Try to take 5 minutes and give yourself permission to have a break. Get outside and get some fresh air, have a sit down and read a book or magazine, or listen to your favourite song. Focus on your growing baby and how important it is to you to keep them healthy and safe from harm. You can look at our 4Ds or the NHS website for more tips on what to do instead of smoking.

Becoming smokefree will mean that you are no longer constantly fighting your cravings and urges to smoke, giving you more time and energy to focus on your baby and ensuring they have the best start in life!
