I'm worried about quitting
You may be worried about what others around you think of you stopping smoking, especially if they are smokers themselves. It may remind them that it is also bad for their health. If they see that you are quitting, they may be encouraged to stop smoking as well. And don't forget, you have the best reason possible for quitting as it will help to protect your growing baby from harm.
You may have smoked for a long time and wonder how you will cope without smoking, or you might think you don’t have enough willpower, but we are here to offer you help every step of the way. You don’t have to do this alone.
- Remind yourself regularly that you can quit. Imagine yourself as a non-smoker, and you will start to believe it.
- Cravings can be tough but they don’t last long and can pass after a few minutes.
- We can give you tips on keeping busy and also provide you with prescriptions for free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) which will keep your cravings at bay. Read more about NRT here.
- Set yourself small goals and tasks, like getting rid of unused cigarettes/tobacco and ashtrays.
- Avoid social situations for the first few days if you think it might be difficult to resist temptations.
- Get your partner, family and friends on board to give you encouragement.
Don’t think about forever, instead work through one day at a time and go at your own pace. Reward yourself for getting through a morning or a day without smoking, you may realise that quitting isn't as hard as you think.
