Electronic cigarettes/vapourisers

E-cigarettes / vapourisers or vapes are battery operated devices which work by heating oil into a vapour that can be inhaled. Some people find them really helpful for stopping smoking because they can contain nicotine which is the addictive chemical found in tobacco.

E-cigarettes or vapourisers are still relatively new and research into understanding the long-term effects of using them is ongoing. Public Health England experts have agreed that e-cigarettes are at least 95% safer than smoking tobacco. Although the vapour produced by e-cigarettes still contains some of the other additional chemicals found in tobacco smoke, this is at much lower levels. You can read an evidence review by Public Health England about this. As they don’t burn tobacco they do not produce any carbon monoxide like cigarettes do. Carbon monoxide can be extremely harmful to developing babies and yourself. Read more about the chemicals found in tobacco here.

We can’t provide you with e-cigarettes but we can give you prescriptions for Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). NRT is free for pregnant women who are seeing a stop smoking advisor.

If you are already using an e-cigarette or want to use one to help you quit we are very happy to support you. We have supported many women to quit smoking whilst using an e-cigarette, reducing the amount of nicotine until they no longer need it.

You can learn more general information about vaping, and more pregnancy specific information in this Electronic cigarettes in pregnancy infographic.
